Chiesa dei Santi Stefano e Caterina

Pozzolatico · Impruneta · Firenze

Description

The church of Santi Stefano e Caterina is the main Catholic place of worship in Pozzolatico, a hamlet of Impruneta, seat of the parish of the same name belonging to the Archdiocese of Florence. The locality of Pozzolatico was already inhabited in Roman times, as archaeological finds in the area show. The sacred building is first mentioned in 1156, when it was confirmed to Ugo, parish priest of Impruneta, by a bull of Pope Adrian IV. In 1671 renovation works were carried out that also led to the construction of the rectory, an event recalled by a plaque on the façade. The Ricci family funded a new restoration in 1735 and on 5 June 1737 the church was reconsecrated.

Outside, the bell tower stands out; in its lower part it still keeps the original Romanesque masonry facing. The façade is plastered and very simple; above the portal a stone coat of arms is set into the wall. The interior, with a classicising eighteenth-century look, has a single nave. Among the works kept here are a Madonna and Child with Saint John between Saints Cosmas and Damian by Alessandro Allori, signed and dated 1582, and a Madonna and Child attributed to Jacopo del Casentino.
