Castello di Vicchiomaggio

Greti · Greve in Chianti · Firenze

Description

The Castle of Vicchiomaggio is located in the municipality of Greve in Chianti. Originally it was called Vicchio dei Lambardi and in 957 it belonged to Littifredo Nobile, son of Adolardo. During the Medici rule it became a villa with a garden and took the name Vicchio Maggio.

From the original construction remains a tall tower with a walkway at the top. Nearby the castle is the church of Santa Maria a Vicchiomaggio, renovated, with a slight two-tone coloration in the window of the apse and an interior with a single nave.

The name Vicchio Maggio is linked to the May festivities of Calendimaggio that were held here in the presence of many Florentines.
