Pieve di San Leolino

The parish church of San Leolino is located just outside the village of Panzano in Chianti, along the road that goes to Siena. Immersed in the hills and in the silence of the Florentine Chianti, this Pieve was one of the most important of the Valdelsa both for its extension and for the wealth of goods and furnishings it had.
Structure and Works
The structure of the Pieve di San Leolino consists of three naves. Outside the facade has a porch, of the sixteenth century, consisting of 5 arches round resting on pillars. Internally the structure is simple with two small apses. Very interesting is the fourteenth-century cloister that is located to the right of the facade and can be reached through a door from the inside of the church. The Cloister has a portico consisting of a wooden roof supported by brick columns. This area acts as a link to the area of the rectory. Inside the Pieve is still rich in works, including two Robbian cibori; a gold background panel depicting the Madonna (14th century); an altarpiece with Madonna and Saints attributed to Giiotto; A triptych of Mariotto di Nardo and one of the Sienese school of the fourteenth century.
History
The building dates back to the twelfth century as can be deduced from the structural and stylistic characteristics. In 1500 was built the porch that we can see today and the patronage of the church passed to the Florentine hospital of Santa Maria Nuova and from the sixteenth century began the restoration and transformation work that gave the church the appearance still visible. In 1942 restoration works were undertaken which restored the church to its original Romanesque appearance.
