Piazza Matteotti is the main square of Greve in Chianti. Its most important feature is the unusual triangular shape, with the church located in the the high vertex of the square. On the perimeter of the square there is a loggia under which it is possible to find numerous shops, bars and typical restaurants.

Piazza Matteotti is the main square of Greve in Chianti. Its most remarkable feature is the unusual triangular shape, with the church placed in coincidence of the high summit. On the perimeter of the square there is a loggia, composed of arched porch, under which you can find many shops, bars and typical restaurants. At the end of the square there is the town hall, next to which is located the tourist office "enjoy chianti". Inside the square you can find also two statues: the first dedicated to the famous explorer "Giovanni da Verrazzano", born in Greve in 1485, the second is a bronze "winged torso" in front of the town hall.
The history of the square has ancient origins as we believe that this was the first element of a country that has gradually expanded. Its role was that of "mercatale" under the domination of the castle of Montefioralle; in fact it was common that all the castles, placed on top of the hills, had a place downstream where the markets were held and where many travelers participated. Thanks to the strategic position of the square, that is located halfway between the main valleys of the territory, there were many people who took part in the markets, creating a kind of tradition that has been handed down until today, when the market takes place every Saturday morning. .
The square is always accessible on foot or riding a bike, while for vehicles there are times when there is a ban on transit (available on our application the timetable), so as to encourage a better experience for those who visit.
