Chiesa di San Lorenzo

The ancient church of Volpaia or Church of San Lorenzo, is located in the town of Radda in Chianti, in the province of Siena.

It is still recognizable for having in the facade a circular eye, today walled, and, above the simple portal, a pointed arch. The church has a rectangular plan, a single nave, and is covered with simple goats. This building, very rough, could date back to the fourteenth century, but it is also possible that it was built in the second half of the fifteenth century, after the destruction of the Aragonese, on the remains of a pre-existing Romanesque church. In fact, its right side, which coincides with a stretch of the walls, is not covered by sandstone rows as the oldest parts of the castle, and instead shows an irregular wall where sketches of white trees well chiseled, perhaps a remnant of a pre-existing Romanesque church, alternating with fragments of sandstone. The church, which served as a bell tower one of the remaining towers of the castle, was deconsecrated in the fourteenth century, when the new church of Volpaia was built.
