Montefioralle

Montefioralle is one of the 308 most beautiful and oldest villages in Italy. A destination chosen by many tourists, it offers a journey back in time to medieval times. This place is located on top of a hill, above Greve in Chianti, and can be reached both by car and on foot (about 30 minutes) via a road that passes through olive groves. Once arrived it will be possible to visit the village and the surroundings and, for those who want, also have lunch or dinner thanks to the two restaurants present (usually open from spring to autumn). The village has an elliptical structure surrounded by walls, which have 4 gates. Along the internal road you can admire the stone structures and identify the house that belonged to the Vespucci family where legend has it that Amerigo Vespucci also lived in the early years of his life (recognizable thanks to the wasp engraved on the wall). Outside the walls you can find some remains of the towers along the walls (now converted to houses) and the beautiful landscapes of the hills of Chianti.
La Storia
The history of Montefioralle has decidedly ancient origins. Originally the place was called Monteficalle, it is supposed because of the presence of numerous fig trees. The first document we have dates back to 1085. It is thought to have been a German monk, traveling to Rome, the one who first began to give life to the village by creating a fortified monastery. Later many families passed the ownership of the castle. Among the places that it is recommended to visit inside the village there is also the church of Santo Stefano, located at the top of the village.
