Palazzo Comunale di Greve in Chianti

The imposing town hall, in neo-Renaissance style, overlooks the ancient square of Greve, on the opposite side from the Church of Santa Croce .
The current palace stands on the remains of the old palace, whose construction was begun in 1485 and finished in 1489.
The project was by the engineer Carlo Baglioni.
The municipal coat of arms
The coat of arms of the Municipality of Greve in Chianti is composed of two distinct parts: a Samnite shield divided horizontally into two fields shows the upper one, blue, bearing the figure of the paschal lamb with a halo and cross flag which responds to the classic iconography of the Christian Agnus Dei; the lower field instead, yellow, evokes the distinctive color of the Adimari family, lords of the Castle of Cintoia and at the helm of the homonymous League.
This coat of arms was drawn up after 1860 when the Italian municipalities were formed following the unification of the national territory; the figure of the Agnus Dei is perhaps to be attributed to a symbology of peace reached after the hard struggles for unity and perhaps also to the fact that the first political classes to administer our municipality were of declared Catholic faith.
The shape of the Samnite shield, on the other hand, could symbolically recall the defeat of the ferocious peoples of Sannio by the Romans when Rome was at the beginning of its territorial development and therefore recall the noble origins of the new Italian state and the struggles for unification carried out together with all its municipalities.
The iron crown, a specific symbol of the Italian State, later gemmated and turned golden, above the shield was granted to the new municipalities only when it was very ancient administrative realities, such as the Podesta office of Greve, and recalls the simple iron crown with which Charlemagne was designated emperor.
